We finished breakfast. I finished posting my debt payments. Hugo sent messages to his family. And then we buckled in and got on the shipcomms with the tower and got permission to leave the dock and got into the takeoff queue.

After we blasted off and we finally got out into the upper atmosphere, we made the jump into deep space, and then we unbuckled our seatbelts and looked at each other.

Hugo took me to his quarters. We hadn’t shared a bed last night, and I decided not to ask about it, because of being so exhausted. For all I knew, in his culture, mates didn’t share a bed. Their mating activities seemed sort of athletic, so maybe it wasn’t typically associated with night time. Also, I got the impression their mating was much more focused on, uh, mating—making babies—than a pleasure activity like humans were.

Well, and the Toth also, to be honest.

Of course, it obviously was pleasurable for him. I should ask, but I didn’t want to offend him again with all my questions, in case I sounded disparaging. I worried a little, though. He said that the violence of the bond would disappear when I was pregnant. Would he not want to have sex at all after I was knocked up?

I’d never been pregnant, but I didn’t think I was going to lose all interest in sex when I was.

We stood looking down on the sleeping berth in his quarters, which honestly wasn’t really big enough for two people to stretch out on, but I thought we could fit if we snuggled. I wanted to sleep in the same bed as him, and I would have to ask him to try it, at least, at some point.

But this was all going to be an exercise in give and take, each of us needing to be sensitive to the other’s compromises. I couldn’t ask him to make all of them. On the other hand, I was the one going into the complete unknown, so that did tend to mean that I was at a disadvantage compared to him.

“So,” he said softly, “if, um, you weren’t mated to a man, what would you usually do to, uh, start things?”

I shrugged. “Kiss?”

“Yeah?” He looked cheered by this. “Okay, that’s pretty similar with me, uh, with my people.”

“Do you… do you have sex if you’re not mated?”

“Oh, sure,” he said. “Definitely. You can’t figure out if you’re mated unless you have sex, so you definitely have sex with people who don’t end up being your mates. Otherwise, what, I would have been a virgin?”

“Right,” I said, shaking my head. “You’re obviously not.”

“No, trust me, every eligible woman in my clan tried to get my mating bond to trigger for them.”

“Every woman? We’re going back to your clan, and they’ve all boned you?”

He gave me a mischievous grin. “Jealous?”

“How many women are we talking about? How big is your clan?”

He reached out and caressed my cheek. “Remember the several times I’ve explained that I’ve never felt anything like what I feel with you?”

I had to smile at that.
